AI-Powered Submission Intelligence Transforms Commercial Underwriting
Appulate Introduces Submission Intelligence Platform for AI-Powered Commercial Underwriting
A “SIP” that brings submission data, outside intelligence, loss history, and underwriting review together in one connected experience
Appulate today introduced its Submission Intelligence Platform, or SIP, an AI-powered underwriting review experience designed to turn fragmented commercial insurance submissions into structured, actionable intelligence.
As artificial intelligence reshapes insurance technology, the definition of submission automation is changing. Reading documents and extracting data is no longer enough. Underwriters increasingly need technology that can understand information across documents, bring in relevant outside context, identify potential inconsistencies, and direct attention to the areas that deserve further investigation.
What is a Submission Intelligence Platform?
Commercial submissions rarely arrive as clean, complete data. Information may be spread across ACORD forms, supplemental applications, loss runs, SOVs, spreadsheets, quote applications, emails, and supporting documents.
Traditionally, technology has focused on digitizing individual pieces of that process. AI creates the opportunity to connect them.
Appulate’s SIP extracts and organizes submission information into one underwriting view, then supplements it with relevant intelligence from approved public and third-party sources, including business records, classification resources, regulatory information, motor vehicle data, public web presence, and other available sources.
The platform can surface differences between submitted and outside information, missing details, potential classification concerns, operational information that may warrant additional review, and other signals that help an underwriter better understand the risk.
AI-generated findings can also include confidence scores and sources, giving underwriters additional context about where supporting signals are strong and where further investigation may be appropriate.
Moving Beyond Document Extraction
AI has made document ingestion dramatically more capable, but extraction is only the first step.
A Submission Intelligence Platform moves from answering “What does this document say?” toward questions such as:
- What do all of these documents tell us about the risk?
- Does this risk match our appetite, and how well?
- Is important information missing or inconsistent?
- What additional context can outside sources provide?
- Do the submitted classifications align with the business operations?
- What information deserves the underwriter’s attention first?
Appulate also brings structured loss history into the same experience, allowing underwriters to review claim activity, reserves, paid losses, experience modification information, operations, classifications, and other submission details together.
The platform can serve as the underwriting review interface and work alongside existing technology. Extracted and enriched data can also move downstream through APIs into underwriting, rating, policy administration, and other core systems.
“AI is changing what insurers should expect from submission technology,” said Jeff Harris, CEO at Appulate. “It is no longer just about extracting fields from a document. The opportunity is to connect the submission data, the supporting documents, outside intelligence, and loss experience in one simple interface so the underwriter can understand the risk faster and know where to focus their attention.”
Commercial underwriters have access to an enormous amount of information. The challenge is making it useful without creating even more work. A Submission Intelligence Platform helps turn that information into a clearer starting point for underwriting.
When a submission feels more like a firehose of documents and data, the idea is simple:
Take a SIP before you drink the whole thing.
